HSS Hire Group plc (LSE: HSS) is a supplier of tool and equipment hire in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as being a logistical and technical partner to businesses of all sizes. Operating under the banner of HSS Hire, the group has a network of several hundred outlets. HSS Hire originated in Kensington, west London in 1957. Today, it employs over 2,900 workers, and has a fleet of over 800 vehicles.
The company has been making large investments in transforming its IT infrastructure, modernising internal systems and improving internal processes. Security has always been one of the biggest concerns to everyone in the retail sector and it is no surprise that one of the key elements of this transformation program was finding a strategic partner with a solution that would be a good fit for our organisation.
Presented with the challenge of detecting modern threats, our long-established security systems and practices provided limited coverage and were often lacking the necessary insight.
We looked at an extensive range of solutions aimed at improving both our detection and prevention capabilities. The use-cases they targeted though were often limited and deploying them collectively would require a significant financial and time commitment. The complexity of deploying, configuring and managing SIEM and log management solutions made them unsuitable for us due to their lengthy deployment timescales and our limited in-house security resources who would be required to review dashboards and filter the output.
Having been impressed by the capabilities ThreatSpike demonstrated during their limited Proof of Concept deployment, a decision was made to incorporate their solution into the design of our updated infrastructure. The chosen setup involved network sensors located at our key sites and installation of nearly 2500 endpoint agents covering both corporate offices and branch sites. Together these provided us with improved visibility of our technology estate and granular control over corporate machines, both inside and outside our network.
